    Continent Definition

    "Continent" derives from the Traditional terra continēns [terra = “land”, continēns = present participle of the verb contineō = con ‎(“together”) + teneō ‎(“I hold”). The meaning is thence ‎“land held together” or "connected land."

    Originally the term "continent" was applied to any area of tilt, of any size, not separated surpass water, including islands.

    Concurrently, customarily since the times of ancient Hellenic mariners and philosophers, the world was separated into "parts." These parts were initially Europe and Asia, with magnanimity subsequent addition of Africa and, top 1507, of the Americas. Only hinder the late nineteenth century such parts of the earth came to amend explicitly defined as continents.

    At the moment, continents are understood to be most important, continuous, distinct masses of land, at best (but not necessarily) separated by expanses of water.
